With Nation Bullying Prevention Month upon us, it feels appropriate to share some words of encouragement to those suffering from bullying. These profound tenets come from the Sith, who have always sought to be a comforting people. Ahem,
To those boys and girls, men and women that are or have endured bullying and torment at the hands of others:
Peace is a lie, there is only passion.
Through passion, I gain strength.
Through strength, I gain power.
Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken.
The Force shall free me.
Most troopers in the Legion have been in your shoes. We have been the victims of abuse across the spectrum from friends, family to random people on the street. We have witnessed or been subjected to acts of verbal torment, physical assault, sexual abuse and a slue of other atrocities no being should ever endure. How can this be said?
With the simple fact that the Legion gathers members of society from all walks of life. At least one member of the 501st has been in your shoes. We would like to promise that it gets better but there are no guarantees. The headlines of the news and the experiences of our lives have proven that the road to recovery from bullying is a long and arduous path.
Now, why mention the Code of the Sith?
Because it’s true. Peace IS a lie, there is only passion. The reason most people are bullied is simply the fact that the are different. We are guilty of enjoying something considered to be “deviant” behavior by the majority around us.
So long as what you are doing does not break the law and/or hurt yourself or others, there is nothing deviant about you. You’re simply passionate about something. Try as you may to “fit in” by denying your true self, peace will always elude you. Your passion drives you and is an integral part of what makes you, YOU.
Embrace and celebrate what makes you unique. Connect with others in person or via the interwebs (using common sense and keeping yourself protected, of course) that share your interests. Find someone that you can just talk to and let your guard down for a moment or two. Normally those people up to the task are right at your elbow, you just need to take a good look to see them. Also, remember that it’s a two way street and be their support as well. If you don’t have someone, we’re including links for support at the bottom of this post.
By sharing your passion with others, you not just empower yourself but those close to you as well. Only when you embrace yourself for all you are will you find some happiness and strength. Let that strength empower you to achieve your dreams and break out of the shell that society constructed to limit you and that you created to hide behind.
With the empowerment to stand up in the middle of a room and state proudly, “My name is Derek Klivian. I know I am different. I’ve never been prom king or captain of the sports team. I’m shy but a great person when you take the time to know me. My life may seem strange but I love what I do. It took me 25 years to get to where I am and I got here as fast as I could.”
Your chains are broken and you are free, a Force for good and positive energy in the world.
Will this be an easy road? No. Self discovery is one of the most difficult yet worthwhile endeavors a person can undertake. It may take weeks, months or years to gain that firm ground but it’s still worth it.
Will you ever be done? No. The human condition is one of constant self discovery but what is important is you remain true to yourself and never give up.
Will you be alone? No, not if you allow yourself to ask for help. Hopefully here are people physically near you, family and friends, to be your companions on this journey. If not, they may appear later down the road. But there are support groups to link people from around the world, so spiritually you don’t have to be alone. Simple tip, head for joy always even though the road may seem difficult. So long as you are not putting yourself or anyone else in harm’s way, the destination will be worth it.
Denying the problems of life will not make them disappear. Looking them square in the eye and saying, “You will not defeat me” will empower you to embrace and love yourself as you are, quirks and all.
See, we said the Sith were a comforting people.
